The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall

As part of the AQA GCE German A2 Level course, students are required to study two cultural topics and, at the Moorlands VI Form College, we chose to study a period of 20th century history from a target language-speaking country or community: The Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

The Berlin Wall was a concrete barrier built by the German Democratic Republic, GDR, that completely enclosed the city of West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin. The Wall included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses.

As part of the cultural topic, we were required to study, and then produce a PowerPoint Presentation and an extended essay on:

➤ The main events of the period

➤ The causes of these events

➤ The importance, influence and effects of these events

➤ The ideas and influences of at least two individuals who made a significant impact during the period

➤ Specific actions of these individuals plus an appraisal of the importance of these actions

➤ A personal perspective: Would I have liked to have lived in that period?
